(The 19^th century Chorten is patterned after the famous Bodhanath Chorten of Nepal, with eyes painted at the four cardinal points. It was built in fulfillment of the prophecy of the second Gangteng Tulku Tenzin Lekpai Dhundrup. People maintain that it was built in order to subdue Nyala duem, the dreaded demoness believed to have been terrorizing the travelers and people in the locality. The Chorten is supposed to be situated at the point where the three ridges and the three edges of the sky meet. A major chunk of the movie ‘Travelers and Magicians,’ a Bhutanese-Austrian co-production, was shot near the Chendebji Chorten. The film was written and directed by Dzongsar Jamyang Khyentse who is a ‘Trilku’ (Reincarnated Master) of the Khyentse lineage, as well as an accomplished filmmaker and author of popular English language expositions of Buddhism. )
